Need of an Integral Philosophy for Social Change

Social change is a universal phenomenon and it occurs in every society. Change is inevitable and it takes place in all fields. Society means a mass of people living in a particular place with a common interest. The term ‘social change ’ is often used to describe variations in, or, modifications of any respect of social process, social patterns, social interaction or social organization. Great thinkers emerged from various societies induce social change. There are many concepts available for social change. But the problem is that they always try to drag the society towards their fundamental aim. The world has seen many reformers from time to time. Some of them have been from political fronts and others from the religious realm. The present world has become a global village due to the growth of information technology. Hence one theory cannot dominate or compel others. We need to find a common, universal, integrated philosophy to guide the entire global society. Individual societies might have their own dogmas, which cannot be replaced. But when they interact with a global surface they need to accept the need of an integral theory and practice. Integral philosophy envelops multiple endeavors of promoting physical, intellectual, moral, spiritual and social values. It must be able to cover the entire human condition and the totality of the human personality.

I would like to expand on the above and embed an all important elemental factor within the fabric of that passage. We must consider greatly our Earth, this is more than just a ‘place’ which houses life, it is the foundations and reason for our existence. Too many times over the caring capacity of the Earth is taken for granted and not considered when decisions that could potentially affect the Earth negatively are made. As human beings we are blessed with foresight, yet our foresight goes against our instinctual patterns of survival and longevity of life. We often make decisions that cause pain to ourselves and others, although the effects of these decisions are not always felt instantly, these effects do branch out to other living beings, affecting their safety and wellbeing. The important factor we miss as ‘intellectuals’ is the truth of the interconnectivity of all life on Earth. Would it not be nice if we could use, abuse and destroy this Earth, then miraculously evaporate, teleport and transform to another Earth (the one next door) and resume living as if all is well. Let us assume for a moment that this was possible, an important point is still missed here. And that is of respect, respect for ourselves, the decisions we make and for all of those around us.

Decisions must revolve around thoughtfulness and consideration of ALL living beings. A holistic thought pattern must be employed, for the reality is we only have one Earth. Individual, attitudinal change is crucial to the movement of current cultural practices which revolve around waste, scarcity and excess greed. Deep change of current non sensical practice begins with one and ends with the masses. Change at a systemic level will take the enormous dent we are progressively pounding in to the Earth; an idea alone is useless without the power of action. We must remember that action begins with that idea, so may we all have that idea that is all inclusive and all caring for that which gives us the ability to be, feel, love, play and experience all that is… SS.
